About the Story
An author struggling with a home improvement project of restoring a complex, filth-encrusted air conditioning vent for his wife comes to realize the beauty of the object he despised and sees the parallel between his cleaning effort and editing his stories. This experience is an example of the literary device of ostranenie, "making strange" where an ordinary unremarkable thing or experience becomes appreciated by a change in viewpoint or circumstance. The allegory for editing is obvious.

AUTHOR'S PURPOSE
Why This Story Was Written
As a means of relieving stress while cleaning said vent, originally written in the uncensored graphic language it seemed to call for, it became a learning experience as I completed the task and did finally appreciate it. Since I was in a critique group comparing and editing stories, I submitted it for fun to my colleagues as a metaphor for the editing experience. Sometimes only by thorough cleaning do you really understand what you’ve made.

All writers have dreaded "killing their darlings" and doing what must be done to clean and edit a story, and yet seen the beauty of the result when the task is finally embraced.
